Historical background

After the collapse of the Russian Empire in the October 1917 Revolution, Ataman (military commander) A.M. Kaledin declared the independence of the Don Republic in the Don region. In early 1918, preparations for issuing a new currency began, and A.M. Nazarov was appointed as the new Ataman on January 30th.

This banknote was officially issued just two weeks later, on February 16, 1918, and in March of the same year, Rostov-on-Don temporarily fell to the Red Army, making it a rare currency issued in the midst of the Russian Civil War.
