🕋 Silver coins that tell the story of the beginning of the Islamic Empire

What we would like to introduce to you now is the Umayyad Dirham Silver Coin, a mysterious coin that seems to have been resurrected from the world of 711 AD, more than 1,300 years ago.

The dirham was issued during the reign of the then caliph (the supreme ruler of the Islamic state), Al-Walid I (reigned 705-715).

His reign was a golden age, a time of unprecedented expansion for the Islamic Empire, including the invasion of Andalusia (present-day Spain) and the start of expansion into India in the east, establishing the hegemony of the Islamic Empire.

This coin is a symbol of that era and an important testament to the early unified monetary system of Islamic civilization.

🏛️ Mint location: Wasit — an important monetary city

The dirham was minted in the Iraqi city of Wasit.

At the time, the city was a strategic stronghold established by the famous military commander Hajjaj ibn Yusuf and served as an economic and administrative center.

Wasit means "middle" and was named after its location between the two major cities of Basra and Kufa.

The dirhams minted in this city, with their intricate Kufic calligraphy and religious designs, are considered the origin of Islamic numismatic art.

🖋️ Design and Quranic engraving

One of the things that makes this coin so special is its lettered design.

At the time, Islam prohibited idolatry, so portraits of kings and emperors were not used, as in the Roman and Byzantine Empires, and religious messages were instead inscribed in Arabic calligraphy (Kufic script).

On the front is the following phrase:

• “لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له”

(There is no god but Allah and He has no partner)

• “بسم الله، ضرب هذا الدرهم بواسط سنة اثنين وتسعين”

(In the name of Allah, this dirham was minted in Wasit in 92 AH)

On the back you will find the following Quranic verse:

• “الله أحد، الله الصمد، لم يلد ولم يولد، ولم يكن له كفوا أحد”

(Surah 112 of the Quran, "The Truthful")

These also served as propaganda tools to widely spread the monotheistic faith of Islam.
