AH1277 / Reigned for 5 years (1864) Ottoman Egypt Abdulaziz 10 palatal copper coin

Product Description

This is a 10 palat copper coin issued in Ottoman Egypt in the year AH1277 of the Islamic calendar, the fifth year of the Sultan's reign. In the Western calendar, this corresponds to 1864, and it was issued during the reign of Abdulaziz, the 32nd Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.

At the center of the surface is the intricate and beautiful "Tugra," a signature symbolizing Abdulaziz's authority, and below it are the Arabic numeral "10" indicating the face value and the word "Para." The Tugra was the official signature of each Ottoman sultan, and was used on royal decrees, seals, and coins.

The reverse side bears an inscription in Arabic script meaning "minted in Egypt," along with the Hijri year "1277," indicating the year of the Sultan's accession to the throne. The number at the top represents five years of his reign, indicating that the coin was actually issued in 1864.

Although Egypt was under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire at the time, it had developed its own system of governance and currency. This coin is an interesting historical document that conveys the political and economic relationship between 19th-century Egypt and the Ottoman Empire.
