Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, joint rule of three brothers, silver coin, 1 dirham, AH657 (1258-1259 AD), Konya mint, 2.98g

Product Description

This item is a silver 1 dirham coin issued under the joint rule of the three brothers Kaykaus II, Kılıç Arslan IV, and Kayqubad II during the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, which ruled medieval Anatolia. It was minted in the year 657 of the Hijri calendar, or around 1258-1259 AD, at the Konya mint located in present-day Turkey.

The Seljuk Sultanate of Rum was a Turkic Islamic dynasty that ruled Anatolia from the late 11th to the early 14th centuries. Its capital, Konya, flourished as a political and commercial center, playing a vital role in the trade network connecting the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Central Asia.

The three brothers whose names are inscribed on this coin were sons of Sultan Caixlo II. After their father's death, a system of co-ruling was adopted between the three brothers, against the backdrop of conflicts over the succession to the throne and intervention by Mongol forces. The political compromises and complex power relationships of that time are reflected in the coin bearing the names of the three brothers.

The year 657 in the Hijri calendar marks the final stage of the issuance of coins jointly issued by the three brothers. Although the actual political situation had already changed by this time, silver coins bearing the names of the three brothers continued to be issued in Konya. Therefore, this coin is an interesting historical document that conveys the unstable situation at the end of the Seljuk dynasty of Rum.

Both sides are inscribed with religious texts in Arabic script, the Sultan's title, the names of the three brothers, and information about the mint and year of issue. The design, typical of Islamic coinage, features bold, powerful lettering arranged in multiple lines, without the use of human figures. The floral decorations at the top and bottom are also striking features of this particular coin.

This coin weighs approximately 2.98 grams. Silver coins from that era were manufactured by placing silver pieces between molds and striking them one by one. Therefore, there are individual differences in shape, thickness, placement of lettering, and strength of the strike. The actual coin pictured shows wear, minor scratches, scuffs, areas with weak strikes, and surface irregularities, but the Arabic lettering on both sides is clearly visible over a wide area.

This distinctive silver coin, featuring the simultaneous depiction of three rulers, is recommended for anyone interested in the Seljuk dynasty, Turkish history, medieval Islamic history, Mongol Anatolia, Silk Road trade, or Arabic script.
