Abbasid Caliphate Al-Mahdi Silver Dirham AH 161 (777–778 AD) al-Muhammadiya Mint
Product description at the beginning
This item is a silver 1 dirham coin issued during the reign of al-Mahdi, the third Caliph of the Abbasid Caliphate. Based on the Arabic inscription around the edge, it is classified as a type minted at the al-Muhammadiyah mint in 161 Hijri (777-778 AD). It is a historical silver coin from the late 8th century, approximately 1,250 years ago, a time when the Islamic world was undergoing political and cultural development.
Al-Muhammadiyah was an important minting center located in present-day Iran, generally associated with the ancient city of Rey. Rey was a key transportation hub connecting East and West trade, and played a vital role in politics, commerce, and coin production during the Abbasid period. This coin is also a tangible historical document that conveys the economic ties between the Iranian region and the Abbasid central government at that time.
Inscription on the surface
In the center, the following confession of faith is inscribed in Kufic Arabic script:
لا إله إلا الله
Allah وحده
لا شريك له
This means, "There is no god but Allah, and Allah is one and there is no one like him."
The following publication information is printed on the outer edge.
بسم الله ضرب هذا الدرهم بالمحمدية سنة احدى وستين ومئة
This inscription means, "In the name of Allah, this dirham was struck in al-Muhammadiyah in 161 AD," and is an important inscription indicating the minting place and year of issue of this coin.
Inscription on the reverse side
The following content is placed in the center:
Muhammad Rasul
الله صلى الله
عليه وسلم
الخليفة المهدي
The inscription reads something to the effect of, "Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. May Allah bless him and grant him peace. Caliph al-Mahdi."
The coin is inscribed with religious texts to the effect that "Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, who has sent him with guidance and the true religion, which has surpassed all religions." This text, widely used on early Islamic coinage, is derived from verse 33 of chapter 9 of the Quran.
