About the Queen's Beasts Series
The Queen's Beasts series is the official Bullion series of 10 coins developed by the Royal Mint from 2016 to 2021.
Its origins date back to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
On coronation day, ten six-foot (approximately 180 cm) heraldic beasts lined the entrance to Westminster Abbey,
symbolizing the bloodline, alliance, and legitimacy of the British royal family.
These statues were sculpted by sculptor James Woodford RA and are currently preserved at the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec, Canada.
In the UK, a stone replica can be seen at Kew Gardens.
Historical Background of the Griffin of Edward III
The griffin is an ancient mythical beast known for possessing the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle.
Since the lion is considered the "king of beasts" and the eagle the "king of birds," the griffin is considered the king of all living creatures and is regarded as a particularly powerful and majestic creature.
In medieval Europe, the griffin symbolized courage, strength, protection, vigilance, agility, and keen insight,
and was particularly spoken of as the "beast that guards treasure."
The griffin is deeply associated with King Edward III.
Edward III engraved the griffin on his seal, entrusting it with the legitimacy and role of guardian of his royal power.
Shield Design and Symbolism
The shield on the reverse depicts the Round Tower of Windsor Castle.
This is the birthplace of Edward III and symbolizes his royal origins.
Atop the Tower, the Royal Standard is hoisted, surrounded by oak branches and topped by the Crown.
This design symbolizes the continuity, strength, and legitimate rule of the monarchy.
Reverse: Winged Guardian
The reverse design was created by Royal Mint coin designer Jody Clark.
The Griffin, clutching a shield and spreading its wings, takes advantage of its large 10-ounce size to depict the griffin in exquisite detail, down to the feathers, muscles, and claws.
The metal weight, purity, and year of issue are clearly marked around the outside, clearly indicating the coin's practicality and legibility as a bullion coin.
Overse Design (New Guilloché Obverse)
The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the face value "10 POUNDS."
This silver coin is also the first in the 10 oz Queen's Beasts series to feature a new guilloché (radial) pattern.
This significantly improves both counterfeit prevention and visual beauty.
The 10 oz Silver Coin
Compared to 1 oz and 2 oz silver coins, 10 oz silver coins have distinct characteristics in terms of their amount, presence, and liquidity.
However, since their value as bullion is the primary consideration when selling, GoldSilverJapan prioritizes their pure silver content when assessing their value.
