Information on Buying Peace Dollars (1921–1935) – GoldSilverJapan
Peace Dollars are historic silver coins issued in the United States from 1921 to 1935. They are special coins symbolizing "peace" after World War I. Created as a new silver dollar to replace the Morgan Dollar, this series remains highly sought after by collectors and investors worldwide today due to its artistic design and the historical context of its issuance. GoldSilverJapan actively purchases these precious Peace Dollars at high prices. This page provides detailed information about their history and characteristics, as well as the number of coins issued by each year and the market value of each grade.
⸻
Historical Background and How They Came About
Peace Dollars were issued to replace Morgan Dollars, which were melted down under the Pittman Act of 1918. At the time, the United States had just emerged from World War I and a strong desire for peace was widespread both at home and abroad. Amid this trend, there was a growing movement to introduce a new silver coin design symbolizing "peace," and the first was minted in 1921. The design was created by the young sculptor Anthony De Franceschi, who based it on the Statue of Liberty, adding a radiating crown to its head and an eagle holding an olive branch and the word "PEACE" on the reverse. This "PEACE" inscription is known as the only direct expression of peace in the history of American coinage.

1921 High Relief
The 1921 Peace Dollar is a special coin. 1,006,473 were minted at the Philadelphia Mint, and its design was highly embossed. While visually striking and of high artistic value, it was not practical for mass production, owing to issues with stackability and mold durability. As a result, the 1921 year ended with high relief, and the following year, 1922, saw a change to low relief (normal relief).
The 1921 high relief is one of the most sought-after Peace dollars in the collector's market, fetching extremely high prices. Specifically, grades of VF-20 are approximately $160, EF-40 are approximately $215, AU-50 are approximately $260, MS-60 are approximately $575, MS-63 are approximately $1,050, MS-64 are approximately $3,000, MS-65 are approximately $6,300, and the highest grade, MS-66, can reach a whopping $80,000.
⸻
Normal relief from 1922 onwards
From 1922 onwards, coins were minted in normal relief. In 1922, Philadelphia minted 51,737,000 coins, Denver minted 15,063,000 coins, and San Francisco minted 17,475,000 coins. While these coins are relatively easy to obtain due to their large circulation, higher grades are still expensive. Prices range from $35 for VF-20, $38 for EF-40, $42 for AU-50, and $55 for MS-60. Prices rise to $130 for MS-63, $485 for MS-64, $550 for MS-65, and $15,000 for MS-66.
The 1922-D mintage was 15,063,000 coins, with prices ranging from $35 for VF-20 to $13,000 for MS-66. The 1922-S mintage was 17,475,000, reaching $35 in VF-20 and $14,000 in MS-66.
⸻
Issuance and Prices from 1923 to 1926
The 1923 Philadelphia mintage was 30,800,000, with prices ranging from $35 in VF-20 to $3,200 in MS-66. The 1923-D mintage was relatively small at 6,811,000, with prices ranging from $38 in VF-20, $1,500 in MS-65, and $24,000 in MS-66. The 1923-S mintage was 19,020,000, reaching around $35 in VF-20, but reaching high prices of $1,300 in MS-65 and $40,000 in MS-66.
1924 Philadelphia coins were minted at 11,811,000, fetching $35 in VF-20, $210 in MS-65, and $1,300 in MS-66. 1924-S coins are rare at 1,728,000, fetching just $10 in VF-20, but reaching $2,150 in MS-65 and $52,500 in MS-66.
1925 Philadelphia coins were minted at 10,198,000, fetching $35 in VF-20, $210 in MS-65, and $1,300 in MS-66. 1925-S coins were minted at 1,610,000, fetching around $55 in VF-20, but reaching $1,600 in MS-65 and $39,000 in MS-66.
The 1926 Philadelphia was minted at 1,939,000, fetching $40 in VF-20, $1,750 in MS-65, and $52,500 in MS-66. The 1926-D was minted at 2,348,700, fetching $35 in VF-20, $1,200 in MS-65, and $2,500 in MS-66, a slightly more modest but still highly rare coin.
⸻
The Lost Peace Dollar of 1964
In 1964, an additional 45 million Peace Dollars were authorized for minting. While 316,076 were actually struck at the Denver Mint, they were all melted down before being released into circulation. As a result, no "1964-D Peace Dollars" exist today, and any you see on the market are counterfeit.
⸻
Peace Dollar Collectibility and Market Demand
Peace dollars are relatively affordable in years of high mintage, but prices rise sharply as their grade increases. Years such as the 1921 High Relief, 1924-S, 1925-S, 1926, and 1926-D command particularly high premiums, making them popular investment targets.
In addition, because they are recognized for their artistic value as coins symbolizing American history, they are valued above and beyond their mere silver bullion value. Demand for collectible and investment purposes is expected to continue.

Peace Dollar Purchase Examples
Recently, GoldSilverJapan purchased a set of 14 Peace Dollars from a customer. The coins were not particularly rare, but rather common, normal-date coins from the 1920s and 1930s. However, the bulk purchase made for a memorable transaction.
The customer, a man in his 40s, wanted to organize part of his grandfather's long-standing silver coin collection, and sent us photos in advance via email. Upon reviewing the images, we could see that all of the coins were Peace Dollars, in circulated VF (Very Fine) condition, with some clearly showing signs of having been cleaned.
In the world of coin collecting, "cleaned" refers to a coin that has lost its original texture and tone (natural discoloration over time) and has been artificially altered. While rubbing the surface with a hard brush or abrasives may appear to enhance its shine, it can also wear away the coin's fine details, resulting in a deduction from an appraisal agency. In that sense, cleaned coins tend to have a slightly lower collectible value than untreated coins.
However, taking into consideration the presence of the Peace Dollar coins themselves, the number of 14, and the remaining solid outline and design of the VF grade, we offered a fair appraisal price based on their condition. We carefully explained the impact of cleaning and the market valuation of VF grade coins to the customer, and after they were satisfied, we were able to purchase them on the same day.
The customer told us, "I was worried because I didn't know if they had value, but I was relieved when you carefully examined each one," and we were very encouraged by their words. Even though they have been cleaned, these silver coins are often important items filled with family memories and history, so we value handling them carefully and with integrity above all else.
We are currently re-inspecting each of the 14 Peace Dollars we purchased, performing preservation treatments as necessary, and preparing them for their next owners. While there are limitations to their condition, these silver coins continue to hold new value not only for their material value, but also for their collectibility, decorative value, and as "pieces with a story."
Even with coins like this one, which have been cleaned and are VF grade, we are able to provide a satisfactory appraisal due to the complete number of coins and the clear state of each individual coin. Rather than assuming "this one is in poor condition and won't sell," we encourage you to let our experts take a look at it.
At GoldSilverJapan, we offer consultations on appraisals only and offer advice on coins that have been cleaned in the past. When you find an old coin, we strive to ensure that it is not just an "old coin" but also "someone's memory and story."
