[Customer Experience] Purchase of 20 Morgan Dollars – The "Special Value" Residing in Standard Dates

GoldSilverJapan Staff Blog

Hello, this is GoldSilverJapan.
This time, we'd like to share our experience with a recent purchase of 20 Morgan Dollars at our store.

The coins were all "normal date" coins, not particularly rare dates, but our staff were deeply touched by their excellent condition and the customer's passion for the transaction.

◆ Customer Comment

A few days ago, a male customer in his 50s contacted us via LINE appraisal.

"While sorting through my father's belongings, I came across a bunch of American silver coins he'd collected in the past. I have 20 Morgan Dollars."

When we looked at the photos he sent us, we saw that they were indeed all Morgan Dollars. Most of the coins were minted between the 1880s and the early 1900s, commonly known as "normal date" coins.

However, it was their condition that caught our attention.

◆ Some of the coins were stunningly beautiful.

Of the 20 coins, more than half were in excellent condition, ranging from AU (About Uncirculated) to MS (Mint State).

Their original luster was evident the moment you held them.

The cheeks of the goddess statue showed almost no signs of wear, and the eagle feathers on the reverse were three-dimensional.

Some of the coins were so good that it seemed they could easily be graded MS by PCGS.

Even for normal-date coins, coins in such good condition are rare on the market.

Each coin conveyed how carefully the client's father had preserved them.

◆ Appraisal and Recommendation

Our shop provides individual appraisals for each coin, regardless of the number of coins purchased.

In this case, we particularly valued the AU to MS coins at a higher price than the general market value.

We carefully explained to the client how each condition and year is valued in the market.

Based on this, we offered the client the following two options.

All 20 coins purchased for cash on the same day.

Grading service → Sales consignment (some coins are considered high-grade coins)

The customer said, "I wanted to entrust my father's collection to a shop that would properly evaluate them," and requested a same-day cash purchase.

◆ The customer's words made a lasting impression.

"They're not from a rare year, so honestly, I didn't think they were worth that much. But I'm so glad you were able to properly examine and evaluate their condition."

These words have stayed with us.

The value of a coin isn't just determined by its year. It's also determined by its condition, the luster of the silver, how it's stored, and the owner's feelings.
This transaction reminded us that all of these factors combine to determine its value.

◆ What happened to the coins?

The 20 Morgan dollars we purchased
are currently being individually recorded and condition checked, and we are considering submitting some to PCGS, NGC, and other institutions for appraisal.

We will store and sell them in the best possible way, and carefully deliver them to their next owners.

◆ Your collection may be worth more than you imagined.

Coins that are often thought of as low value because of their normal date can be surprisingly valuable, depending on their condition.

At GoldSilverJapan, we carefully appraise each and every normal-date coin,
and offer appropriate suggestions for those likely to be highly valued.

We also offer free appraisals based on photos alone, so please feel free to contact us.

◆ Summary: Coins are filled with memories.

We believe that the family memories and transgenerational feelings embodied in Morgan dollars, like this one, are worth more than their market price.

Passing on those precious memories honestly and faithfully is our mission at GoldSilverJapan.

Please feel free to contact us with any inquiries regarding coin appraisals, sales, or consultations.

In our next post, we will introduce "Conversations with Customers Who Bring in Graded Silver Coins."
We hope you'll enjoy it.
