Product Description
Meiji 3 Silver 1 Yen Coin: A Symbol of Modern Japan
The Meiji 3 Silver 1 Yen Coin, issued in 1870, was the first large silver coin minted by Japan with an eye toward international trade, and is an important symbol of the beginning of modern Japan. It was issued as part of the reforms of the Meiji Restoration and the result of the country's adoption of a Western-style monetary system.
This coin is minted from 90% pure silver, weighs 26.96 grams, and has a diameter of 38.6 mm. The obverse features a dynamic dragon surrounded by the words "Dai Nippon Meiji 3." The reverse features a chrysanthemum crest at its apex, decorated with laurel and paulownia leaves, and the character "ichi-en" (one yen) engraved in the center. The edges are milled.
With a limited mintage and well-preserved coins being rare, this silver coin is highly sought after by collectors. Its historical background and intricate design also give it a special place in Japanese monetary history.
